Third Thursday at The Hidden Gem Music Club from 8:00 to 11:00 PM.
Kareem Powell (p), Jason Swann (ts), Todd Bridges (d), Dave Woehrle (b) & special guest Mark Smarelli (vibes)
Jason Swann is working with Tony at The Hidden Gem Music Club to host another, much needed, jazz jam in the Dayton area. The hottest jazz jam in town has been first Sunday jam down at Wholly Grounds on Wayne Avenue for quite some time - hosted by Kelli Campbell. Jason's jazz jam adventure comes in the nick of time - word on the street is that the Jazz Central building is up for sale - no! say it ain't so! Jason swoops in with his magical sax [or is that super hero sax?] and helps expand the Dayton area jazz jam scene. Thank you Jason - I for one wish you much luck.
While jazz at The Hidden Gem often starts at 7:00 and goes until 9:00 or 9:30, Jason starts the "Gem Jam" at 8:00 PM and jams until 11:00 PM - clearly for pseudo-night owls. Just as Capitol Jazz Records once proclaimed about Benny Goodman, Bebop Spoken Here! I will add that on this night it was a particular treat to be able to hear vibraphonist Mark Smarelli work on his own magic in this bebop atmosphere.
Another treat was meistro Bill Burns working his symphony quartet "pied piper" allure to one-by-one pull in Brad Morgan, Jason Swann & Joe Ulmer to perform a quartet version of Green Dolphin Street like you have never heard! Man-oh-man it was a crowd favorite. Bring your axe and come on down or just pop over for a listen. It will be worth the trip. See you there...
